Overview

Rajasthan has a rich heritage which has evolved over centuries. Thesheer versatility of the various metals and materials used to create craft items, such as wood, stone, metal, grass, paper machier, glass, cane & bamboo, textiles, clay and ceramics makes craft items from Rajasthan truly unique. This combined with the traditional skills of the craftsmen with years of experience and innovative techniques, creates the finest crafted decoratives and utility items.

Today craft items from Rajasthan are much sought after and have established an unsurpassable reputation in the international market. Wooden crafts are available as carved, painted or inlaid on teak wood, rose wood, shisam etc. stone crafts are made using marbles, soap stone, granite, sandstoe, metal crafts are created using gold, silver platinum, white metal and iron, which are further painted, polished, lacquered, etched and embossed.Textiles with ornamentation with beads, embroidery, zari work, applique etc. is also a specialty of rural women in Rajasthan, which is a major source of livelihood for them.

Ramgarh Clay Pottery & Stone Craft
Ramgarh (distt. Alwar) is situated on Alwar-Delhi highway at a distance of 22 km. from Alwar, is well known for its terracotta art. In Ramgarh Tehsil there are around 50 villages having population of 2.5 lakhs.
Ramgarh village in particular has a population of 20,000 and the major craft practiced by the locals are either terracotta or marble stone carving.
There are around 1500 families working in these crafts (350 families of clay craft & 12,00 families of stone craft), but due to lack of awareness, training and skill, using other means of livelihood and migrating to the cities for employment mainly by labour work.

RCCI has taken this cluster under its development project and opened a BDC with full time officer to facilitate the needs of artisans.

  • RCCI INTERVENTIONS

    • Creating awareness camps in the nearby villages to propagate the importance of clay craft in generating employment and poverty reduction.
    • Motivation camps had been organized for trust building
    • Base line survey has been conducted
    • Pilot training programs (skilled transfer) for unemployment and unskilled persons.
    • Stone craft artisans had also approached to RCCI for the upliftment of their craft
    • Creating awareness camps among the stone craft artisans, two CIG have been formed.
    • Value addition work on stone, wood, canvas etc. by ornamental painters have been started for 20 unemployed youths (male & female) of Rural Jaipur, in the guidance of Mr. Mohan Lal Soni, National Awardee Master Craftsman who has been selected as BDSP for this work.
    • Influential capacity of RCCI makes capable to clay craft artisans to get loan from KVIC under subsidy scheme.
    • RCCI have established a clay craft gallery in a small scale, presenting different clay crafts of Rajasthan which is very useful for students, artisans, tourists etc
    • Pilot training programs (skilled transfer) for unemployment and unskilled persons
    • Two groups of 30 women have been formed, taking training of Pottery craft as permanent employment.
    • Two groups formed by RCCI are marketing products successfully in Melas, Fairs at Jaipur, Delhi etc.
    • Both Groups of Clay craft are interested and participating in need based training programme.
    • IGNOU has launched 6 months diploma course in clay craft, and decided to start its first batch at Ramgarh. Theory classes of the programme will be conducted at RCCI’s Ramgarh office and Skill Training Programme will be conducted at Master craftsman’s workshop.
    • Two more groups for clay craft activities have been formed at Ramgarh
    • BDSP, Mr. Om Prakash has been sponsored by RCCI to participate in 15 days exposure visit cum training programme at Netherlands conducted in association with NMCP.
    • Mrs. Kesar Devi, beneficiary of Ramgarh Clay Craft Cluster has been nominated for city group Micro Entrepreneur Award.

    • Performance of groups have set an ideal to the banks, which are now ready to finance their loans upto Rs.50,000/-.
